Beta-carotene
A safe, non-teratogenic precursor to vitamin A — the body converts only what it needs, so it never risks the retinol ceiling. Contributes to RAE at ÷12 from food.
Trimester focus
| Stage | For the mother | For the baby |
|---|---|---|
| First trimester | A safer way to support vitamin-A status without teratogen risk. | Provides a backup vitamin-A precursor for early differentiation. |
| Second trimester | Continues as a safe antioxidant and vitamin-A source. | Antioxidant protection during a period of rapid cell division. |
| Third trimester | Still a safe source of vitamin-A precursor. | Supports continued growth without the retinol-ceiling concern. |
Target note
Food contribution to RAE is β-carotene/12. Does not count against the preformed retinol UL.
